The Hypocrites of Today

These are some timely narrations collected by Muhammad Musa Nasr in his book ‘al-Munafiqun’ (p. 95-98). They are all authentic.

1 – Jubayr bin Nufayr said:

“I went to visit Abu ad-Darda’ at his home in Homs, and I found him praying at his mosque. When he sat for the tashahhud, he began seeking refuge with Allah from hypocrisy. When he finished, I went to him and asked: “May Allah Forgive you, Aba ad-Darda’! What do you have to do with hypocrisy?”

He replied: “O Allah, Your Forgiveness! (he said this three times) Nobody who feels safe from tribulation will be safe from it! By Allah, a man can be tested for a single hour and turn back on his religion.””

2 – ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr said:

“There will come a time when people will gather in their mosques, and there won’t be a single believer in them.”

3 – al-Hasan said:

“The Hour will not come until each people will be overwhelmed by their hypocrites.”

4 – Hudhayfah said:

“The hypocrites among you today are worse than the hypocrites who lived at the time of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم)!”

He was asked: “O Aba ‘Abdillah, how is this so?”

He replied: “They used to hide their hypocrisy. As for the ones today, they display it openly.”

  1. subhaan’Allaah.. that gave me goosebumps.

Today we have so many examples from each and every statement in that post. May Allaah keep our hearts firm and steadfast on the path of righteousness.

  2. Ibn jafar Says:

    Abdullah bin ‘Amr said:

“There will come a time when people will gather in their mosques, and there won’t be a single believer in them.”

Bro, does this mean that the people in these masjids are munafiq kuffar or just muslims who have not reached the level of iman?

    • He’s referring to actual hypocrites, not Muslims who have weak faith.

Statements like this are a figurative way of describing a reality. So, it’s another way of saying that hypocrites will one day be everywhere.

  3. Ibn Zawaar Says:

“. . . By Allah, a man can be tested for a single hour and turn back on his religion.”

It’s the most frightening thing to think of the state of some contemporary personalities. Some were ready to die on the battlefield, while others were known for producing works which were celebrated for supporting our deen, and all it took was a few minutes for us to find them turning back on the ideals they once espoused.

For those of us whose biggest struggle is likely waking up for fajr early, what would it take to pull us down?

  4. Is there any dua in arabic to seek refuge with Allah from hypocrisy? Transliteration in english would be helpful.

  5. Umm 'Atiyyah Says:

    JazaakAllaah khayr.

Some more narrations to think about:

It is reported that Mâlik b. Dînâr – Allâh’s mercy be upon him – said, “I swear, if the munâfiqûn started growing tails, the believers wouldn’t find a spot of ground to walk on.”

It is reported that Al-Hasan Al-Basrî – Allâh have mercy on him – used to say, “If it were not for the munâfiqûn, you would feel all alone in the streets (the streets would be empty).”

    Ibn Battah, Al-Ibânah Al-Kubrâ articles 936-938.

  6. Wild Wild West Says:

    Subhanallah!

If we reflect upon what has happened this past week, it is as if Allah inspired the brother to write this when he did…

  7. SubhanAllaah, something to reflect upon! Indeed Allaah swt is the Best of Planners!!!

  8. Assaalamu alaika Yaa Abaa Sabaya,

“Muhammad Musa Nasr in his book ‘al-Munafiqun’ ”

Is this book available for download?
