Nation of the Desert

Posted in Poetry & Anashid on February 25, 2009 by Tarek Mehanna

Our Lord is Allah * There is no other lord for the people;

Nation of the desert, O eternal people * Who else besides you removed the chains of deception from humanity?

Which caller before you from all who exist * Called out ‘Khosrau and Caesar are no more’?

Who besides you in the present or past * Raised a dawn of guidance by the Qur’an?

Heard by all in the mighty Universe * There is no lord besides Allah for the people;

And it is as if you did not shine in the world * With the guidance of faith and the right path;

And in the darkness of modern times, you forgot * The value of the desert in a life of relaxation;

Every nation got up and built a strong building * And I see your building divided;

In the past, you were a nation * I grieve at how you have now become nations;

Whoever is heedless of his purpose * Is most deserving of totally fading away;

Whoever imitates the lifestyle of the strangers * Will never see nationalism;

Think about your era when * You were an example for humanity, and compete;

Fill the desert with firm will * And bring the soul of ‘Umar back to it…

“Be patient, O prisoner, because you are…”

Posted in Our Prisoners in Our Hearts, Poetry & Anashid on February 20, 2009 by Tarek Mehanna

اللهم فرج عنهم

Be patient, O prisoner * Because you are a sun that the flowers turn for;

Going forth despite your shackles * A leader despite the rocks in your way;

You are defiant, and you are like * A shining blaze in an era of servitude;

You are the bold one leading falcons * In the prison of betrayal;

I know that you’re tired * But, you are the brave lion;

I know that you’re exhausted * But, you are the great hope;

I know that you’re weak * But, you are the shining moon;

I know that you’re confident * That victory is for the patient;

We are surrounded by the petty * And you are with the great;

So, rejoice in your prison * And hold the devastating sword to the denier;

You display determination * While the petty ones sleep in a haze;

Time has stopped in front of your prison * Amazed at the blood that has been sacrificed…

You are the boldest!

Maslahat ad-Da’wah: An Idol Worshipped Instead of Allah

Posted in Sayyid Qutb on February 18, 2009 by Tarek Mehanna

“…And zeal, fervor, and the incessant desire to spread and aid the da’wah can drive those involved in da’wah after the Messengers to use the help of some people while from the start overlooking inseparable implications and aspects of the da’wah that they think are not essential, and they compromise with them in some matters so that they wouldn’t be turned away and oppose the da’wah!

Likewise, they might be driven to use methods that don’t measure up to the specific scales or firm manhaj of the da’wah. They do this out of a desire to aid and spread the da’wah quickly, and in an effort to fulfill what they call ‘maslahat ad-da’wah’ (the interest of the da’wah). The true maslahat ad-da’wah is that it remain firm on the manhaj without deviating in the least. As for the outcome, this is from the matters of the Unseen that none know except Allah. So, it’s not for the carriers of the da’wah to think about these outcomes. Rather, they are to go forth with this clear, straightforward, specific manhaj, leaving the outcome of this firmness to Allah – and the outcome will be nothing but good at the end of the process.

And here is the Noble Qur’an warning them that Satan is waiting for these hopes of theirs to use them to turn them away from the essence of the da’wah: {“Never did We send a Messenger or a Prophet before you except that when he recited the Revelation or narrated or spoke, Satan threw some falsehood in it. But, Allah abolishes what Satan throws in. Then, Allah establishes His signs, and Allah is Knowing, Wise, so that He may make what is thrown in by Satan a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease and whose hearts are hardened. And certainly, the wrongdoers are in far opposition.”} [al-Hajj; 52-53]

Since Allah had protected His Prophets and Messengers from falling into error in this regard, there was no way that Satan could take advantage of their natural hopes regarding their da’wah. Those who are not protected by Allah from this trap need to be warned severely of it out of fear that Satan will enter upon them from the door of the desire to aid the da’wah and protect what they refer to as maslahat ad-da’wah.

Indeed, the term ‘maslahat ad-da’wah’ needs to be removed from the dictionaries of those involved in the da’wah, as it is a form of humiliation and subservience and is Satan’s entrance point, as it would be too challenging for him to enter upon them from the door of the interest of specific people! Maslahat ad-da’wah thus becomes an idol that is worshipped instead of Allah by those involved in da’wah, causing them to forget its fundamental manhaj!

Those involved in da’wah must stay firm on its manhaj and single this manhaj out without turning to look at the outcome that will be brought about by this. It might be suggested to them that this might lead to danger for the da’wah and its people! However, the only danger they should be cautious of falling into is the danger of deviating from the manhaj for any reason whatsoever, whether this deviation is big or small. And Allah Knows better than they do of the maslahah, and this is not something they are even tasked with. Rather, they are tasked with one thing, and one thing only: that they not deviate from the manhaj, and that they not steer off the path…”

The ‘Ibadah of al-Muraghamah

Posted in 'Abdullah 'Azzam, Ibn al-Qayyim on February 17, 2009 by Tarek Mehanna

Ibn al-Qayyim said in ‘Madarij as-Salikin’ (1/222-223):

“…the firmer he is when calling to Allah and fulfilling His commands, the more the enemy becomes intent upon tempting him through foolish people. So, he has essentially put on his body armor when facing this obstacle, and has taken it upon himself to confront the enemy for Allah’s sake and in His Name, and his worship in doing so is the worship of the best of those who know Allah, and it is known as the act of muraghamah, and none are aware of this except those with complete and perfect insight.

And there is nothing more beloved to Allah than one of His awliya’ engaging in the muraghamah and angering of His enemy, and He has alluded to this type of worship in various places in the Qur’an.

The Ruling on Meat Slaughtered in the West

“…During my visits to the West, and when I am being served meals on planes or in restaurants in Europe or America, I would find that I was very hesitant to eat the food, and I wanted very much to search for halal food and find that pure bite to eat in order to protect any part of my flesh from being nourished on haram, as the Fire is more deserving of every bit of flesh nourished on the haram…”

“O people, if you wonder…”

Posted in Poetry & Anashid on February 6, 2009 by Tarek Mehanna

O people, if you wonder * I wonder at them;

They are the wonder of all times * And those who write history are called to witness this;

I loved them, O people * Their stories are a path for me;

They gave their souls to Allah with honor * What a great price;

Their history is a source of honor for us * Their history doesn’t lie…
