The First People to Initiate the Tradition of Shaking Hands

Anas bin Malik said:

“When the people of Yemen came, the Prophet said: “The people of Yemen have come, and they have softer hearts than you,” and they were the first people to initiate the tradition of shaking hands.”

[‘Silsilat al-Ahadith as-Sahihah’; # 527]

And in the narration of Ahmad, Anas said:

“So, the Ash’aris came forth – including Abu Musa al-Ash’ari – and when they approached Madinah, they began chanting:

Tomorrow, we shall meet our beloved * Muhammad and his party

So, when they finally arrived, they shook our hands. They were the first people to initiate the tradition of shaking hands.”

[‘Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad’; 3/112]
